As finally it looks like summer is settling in over London, I visited the Spiegletent at Underbelly on the South Bank. The night’s entertainment being a cabaret drag show called Yummy. And very Yummy it was, writes Chris Peacock.

From its origins as a singular club night in Melbourne, the girls have travelled the world with their show, sashaying their way across the globe and throwing down some raucous entertainment. The blend of amazing choreography, uncountable costume changes and acerbic humour, makes for an intense hour’s entertainment.

The talent in the show is undeniable; amongst their ranks is 2019’s No. 1 burlesque performer in Zelia Rose, and in Joni In The Moon they have a multi-award winning singer/songwriter. The burlesque routines showed an incredibly high level of dance skill and finesse, but were also laden with classic drag humour.

2019 represents 50 years since the Stonewall riots; June saw a month of celebrations of the LGBT community, and with its message of inclusivity and celebration of life, Yummy certainly delivers. For those who have never been to a drag night it may seem overwhelming, however, in the words of director James Welsby ‘Drag is for everyone’.

Yummy is on at Underbelly Festival, South Bank, SE1 until 28th July. Times: Tues – Sun 7.15pm (2nd show at 9.15pm on Saturdays). Admission: £21.50 – £36.50. Phone: 0333 344 4167
