After graduating from the London College of Fashion in 2012, Pembe Kumbi knew she had plenty of ideas, and the skills to bring them into being, but when it came to establishing her business, she found that it could be hard to know where to start. After 7 years, Kumbi Kouture is now a multifaceted fashion and design brand, producing bespoke fashion pieces and bold graphic T shirts, as well as art prints and merchandise inspired by Pembe’s Congolese heritage. Pembe is now sharing the insights gained from her experience by hosting the first ’Vision’ event at T &T2, Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, 12-6pm, Saturday 17th August.
“Vision is about creating a platform for entrepreneurs, especially for young entrepreneurs who have a dream to become somebody” says Pembe. “This event opens doors to those who are trying to reach their goals and dreams. From art to fashion to teaching etc. To network with other people and gain knowledge as well as sharing what you know and most of all, to motivate you”. It is the kind of event which Pembe needed when she was starting out.
Exhibitors at Saturday’s debut Vision include Jeweller Sasa Secrets, the Sydenham-based London Parkour Project, Natural Nyoto Cosmetics, and Black Afro Queens: an agency whose models will be wearing the new Kumbi Kouture collection during the afternoon.
By holding the first Vision event in the area where Kumbi Kouture began, Pembe hopes that people starting their own journey can see for themselves how far it is possible to go.
T&T2 is a venue run by Time & Talents: a local charity based in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey dedicated to creating a place where everyone feels part of a community. The organisation brings people together for mutual support, fun and friendship through a range of services and activities that address social isolation, increase mental & physical wellbeing, and reduce divisions across the community.
