Southbank Centre Associate Company Shobana Jeyasingh Dance returns with the London Premiere of Staging Schiele, a new commission by Southbank Centre.

Inspired by the extraordinary work and life of Austrian artist Egon Schiele, four dancers – Sunbee Han, Dane Hurst, Estela Merlos and Caterina Varvalho – inhabit Schiele’s highly-charged world of colour, masterful lines and unusual perspectives, putting the human body on visceral display. Shobana Jeyasingh’s award-winning choreography matches the intensity of Schiele, engaging with his anxieties as well as his self-confidence, and addressing the male artist’s use and objectification of the female model – bringing his models to life and giving them a platform to express themselves through movement.

Fresh from the success of 2018 show Contagion, Jeyasingh is joined by an exceptional creative team for this piece including composer Orlando Gough, designer and visual artist Ben Cullen Williams, lighting designer Adam Caree, video designer Nick Hillel and costume designer Cottweiler. Poems by Rilke and Schiele himself are sung by Jonathan Baker to a jazz piano and keyboard accompaniment.

Southbank Centre, SE1 8xx from 4th & 5th Nov. Time: 7.30pm. Admission: £18 – £24. Phone: 0203 879 9555.
