A week-long chance for Londoners to explore the capital’s canals, rivers and lakes will be launched on Saturday as part of ‘London Rivers Week’.

There are more than 600km of waterways running through the city – the same distance between Brighton and Edinburgh – an untapped resource for wildlife.

The week-long series of events will begin in Birchmere Park, Thamesmead, on May 25th, from 11am until 3pm.

The free events promises family-friendly arts and crafts to keep the kids entertained, a cutting-edge remote controlled boat to “protect London’s rivers”, mini-beast hunting and more.

In the past London’s rivers were often hidden behind buildings, artificially straightened or buried underground.

But many lost rivers are now coming back to life though rewilding – and will be featured throughout London Rivers Week.
