A man and woman have died after a van chased by police collided with their car in Eltham last night.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene on Footscray Road, shortly after midnight. It is believed they were in their 70s. Next of kin have been informed.
Police say a Ford Transit Van collided with their Citroen C3 after it had first drawn the attention of officers on patrol around half an hour earlier.
The van’s driver had ignored a request to stop after it was seen ‘driven erratically at speed’ and a pursuit followed.
Officers have now arrested the driver on suspicion of driving over the limit, driving while unfit through drugs, and death by dangerous driving.
He was taken to hospital with ‘non life-threatening’ injuries.
Road closures are still in place.
The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed of the incident and a routine referral made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
