The Psychic Project is a mind-reading show based on the true story of America’s psychic spy programme from the Cold War. The CIA learnt that Russia was investing in mind-control research and achieving some remarkable results. Not wanting to be left behind, US scientists began a secret project to train civilians as psychic spies: stealing secrets, manipulating memories and finding out if thoughts can kill. Until 2016, the research was only available via Freedom of Information requests. Now, all the original documents can be viewed in the online CIA library.
Drawing on 100,000 pages of declassified documents, David Narayan attempts their experiments, seeing if a modern audience can use the same techniques.
Unlike most magic or mind-reading shows, Narayan doesn’t attempt to demonstrate any psychic abilities. Instead, it’s the audience who try the various methods that the CIA used over their 23 year research programme.
The Psychic Project is on at The Vaults, Leake Street, Waterloo, SE1 7AD from 12th – 22nd June. Times: 7.30pm. Admission: £20, £16. Phone: 020 7183 2574
