British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT) the leading musical theatre company for young people, whose prestigious alumni include Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith, bring their new musical theatre production Fight Like A Girl to Mountview’s brand new theatre in Peckham.
Fight Like A Girl is a bold, rip-roaring new musical that takes inspiration from the remarkable rise of women’s boxing in 2012 when Nicola Adams became the first woman to win an Olympic Gold Medal for boxing. Drawing upon real-life accounts from young female boxers this highly charged drama questions long-held gender and identity stereotypes and explores what it means to be a woman in these fast-changing times.
“Fight Like A Girl is a highly-charged, emotional, fast-paced roller-coaster of a musical that takes its inspiration from the world of women’s boxing. With a contemporary score that mixes modern electronic music with more tradition musical theatre songs it tells the story of twin sisters separated soon after birth and their quest to be reunited. It is about identity, rebellion, love, friendship and breaking gender stereotypes. It is a large-scale musical that brings together drama, song and dance with elements of physical theatre.” – Nick Stimson, Book, Lyrics and Direction
‘I’m really excited to work on this production to explore different physical motifs and languages. We are looking to develop something different to the choreography you might typically see in Musicals and something integral to the storytelling. The urban themes and sport of boxing are so rich in movement, rhythm and texture, so I can’t wait to see what comes from rehearsals with this excellent young cast.’ – Kevin Johnson, Movement Director
