On Saturday 23rd November the D.D.C. @ The Fox features Tessa, Ras Danny and Doc Murdoch with Full Horns. They’ll be spinning 100% Roots and Culture Reggae, in a Soundsystem style. A host of special guests and Club regulars will be joining Tessa for a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the release of the “Cut”, featuring the best in music of Jamaican origin.
Tessa was the bassie throughout the career of The Slits, whose seminal 70s LP the “Cut” was produced by Dub-master Dennis Bovell. This celebration will be a one away event, at which strictly limited, signed, versions of the poster, will be up for grabs. Tessa’s selection will draw from a deep love of the reggae music and she draws from a great collection, amassed back in the day. Slits vocalist Ari Up lived for a long time in JA and sent back nuff Dubplate and ting and Tess will be drawing on these too…wow.
Another of our amigos, Ras Danny Mosiah, will also be putting the needle to the groove on the wheels of steel. He and Tessa have often worked together and view this night as a collaboration. Danny will need no introduction to regulars at The Deptford Dub Club, as he is a stalwart. He’s more widely know through his work with Jah Shaka, over many years. His sets are always wicked.
Resident Soft Wax will also spinning and live and direct will be our resident Singjay the mighty Doc Murdoch. Expect more guest vocalists and MCs on the mic. too. Warm up selection will come from local hero Don d’ Lion.
There’ll be the usual live instrumental in puts on the mic., supporting both Tessa and Soft Wax. This time we’re featuring a full live horn section. Expect Tim Topcat ( The Topcats ) on Sax, Ahmad Dayes ( United Vibrations ) on trombone and Wicked Will Roper on the Trumpet. There’ll be more talent “ than you could shake a stick at “, at the Deptford Dub Club. In keeping with the celebratory mode, there will be a wealth of the regular guest artists in attendance. This will be a historic event, in this 40th anniversary year of the “Cut”; not to be missed and don’t forget your dancing shoes.

NB: Anybody unfamiliar with Tessa’s massive contribution to bass heavy music should check out the sporadic career of the mighty Slits. A good way into this session would be their version of Johnny Clarke’s “Babylon”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5tfFlsxnsY
from late in their career. However Tess also played all over their awesome debut album, the “Cut”, which is another good starting point for exploring their ouerve. Check their covers of “Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “ Man Who Lives Next Door” too. Not surprisingly this queen of avant bass has a phenomenal collection of reggae records that she’ll be selecting from on this one away night.
