Deptford Dub Club: Moa Anbessa Special
- 20th Apr 2019 - 21st Apr 2019
- 8.00pm til 2.00am
- The Fox and Firkin
- Free before 9.00pm £3 thereafter
Hailing from Battersea; Moa Anbessa first played out at the beginning of 1977. Its core members served their apprenticeships with the even more venerable Lord David Sound. The classic 70s M. A. System was founded by former members of Lord David’s and played against all of the other great Sounds of the era, as well as with more diverse out-fits, like The Slits. This will be a truly historical night of Reggae, Rocksteady and Ska.
Moa Anbessa quickly gained a reputation as one of the most prominent Rasta-oriented Sounds in Britain, gaining residencies at historic venues such as Club Norick, the Four Aces, Studio 200 and others – nuff said. Their affiliated record label issued tracks by Creation Steppers, Jah Thomas, Delton Screechie, Early B, Little John and King Everald, among others. Expect late-70s and early-80s Rasta reggae vinyl classics and plenty of exclusive, unknown dubplates.
Moa Anbessa ceased regular operations in the very early 80s, despite their enormous popularity. So it’s a real coup to get them back, live and in the house. This is not the modern Italian Soundsystem with the same name, but the real deal.
Warm up selection will come from local hero Don de Lion. Resident Steve Wax will be on the decks too. He’ll be joined by Doc Murdoch’s distinctive vocal stylings -- his vocal presence have become a feature of the D.D.C.. Joining them will be Tim Topcat on sax and Wicked Will on Trumpet. Together they’ll be playing a fresh set of Semi-live material.
In traditional style, we will be playing the best in foundation Jamaican roots music: from Ska, through Rocksteady and classic, vintage Reggae, to the present. All the selectors will be digging extra deep into their musical dub-baskets for this event. This will be a strictly vinyl event. An enhanced sound system is a feature of the Dub Club. This session is bound to be really kicking; so don’t forget your dancing shoes and celebrate the rhythm. We eagerly expect this to be one of our most memorable sessions and it’s our birthday!.
Best party frocks for this one then; in keeping with the celebratory mode, there will be a wealth of the regular guest artists in the house. Soft Wax is welcoming back all these selectors, singers and players. They are all stalwarts of the Deptford Dub Club and always a delight. So reach early, we expect a road block. Skanking is a feature of this night in a convivial boozer, with hot food until 10pm.
The Deptford Dub Club happens every month, on the penultimate Saturday, from 8.00 to 2.00 and is always FREE til 9 and £3 thereafter.
